Theres a story that goes behind this character.

Gateway was originally design for a the ~teentitans club contest of make your own Titan (which my team and I won). Now, I liked the character so much that I decided to revamp him a couple of times. I didnt want to get rid of him, nor did I want him existing in the DC universe, so I decided to stick him in my "Eclipse" universe.

Gateway exists in the story as a good guy, but at the same time the antagonist to our hero, Eclipse. Gateway is not a bad guy at all, but where Eclipse exists as a sort of vigilante/Batman figure, Gateway takes the opposite route and openly works with the Police to solve crimes as a sort of Superman figure. He works with the police to catch Eclipse, although hesitantly, and bring an end to Eclipse's vigilantism. He appreciates Eclipse's roll in fighting crime, but does not agree with his methods.

Anyway, here are the basics:

Michael is a brilliant young mind. He graduated high school at the age of 15, as well as graduating college at 18, and earning his Ph.D at the age of 21 in Multi-Dimensional Physics and Exploration.

He later went to work with his father, Isaac Ulrich, the lead mind in Multi-Dimensional theory. His father had been developing a Dimensional-Recall generator, a machine that could create controlled warp rifts for rapid space/time transit.

However, as the project was completed and the time came for the generators first test, the machine horribly malfunctioned (possibly due to foreign sabotage), and a massive warp rift was created which sucked in the research lab and all the scientists and assistants. Michael, however, leaped toward the generators powers supply in hopes of shutting it off and closing the rift. The immense amount of energy being released overloaded the generator, causing it to explode. The multi-dimensional energy that was released was absorbed by Michaels body, miraculously without killing him.

Michael awakened in a hospital, only to find he was the only survivor of the incident. He later discovered that due to the energies absorbed by his body, he now had the ability to create warp rifts himself.

Michael, however, has to where a containment suit, which regulates the energy released to create a rift, there for preventing him from inadvertently creating another dangerously massive rift. Everytime Michael creates a rift, the excess energy from the process is taken and stored, and is used as the suits power supply, allowing it to run off of Michael's own energy. He is also able to channel this energy to his gauntlets, creating concussive energy blasts.

With his new powers, Michael decided to work with the New York City police and use his intellect and powers to help solve crimes.
